Service Log

This is a log of recent service or other maintenance on the 2004 Subaru Forester.  It is in chronological order with the most recent service/maintenance listed first.  I was going to start dropping things off after 6 months but decided to keep it going.

My Routine Monthly Maintenance Check includes checking all fluids, tire pressure, checking the belts and hoses, all lights and generally looking over the whole vehicle for any sign of trouble.  I top off any fluids and address any other concerns.

July 28, 2014 (218,695) - Replaced fuel filter. While I was under the hood I serviced the battery (cleaned the terminals and applied MSD Spark Guard) as well as checking all belts/hoses and fluids.

July 24, 2014 (218,640) - Replaced a license plate bulb and the rear wiper.

July 18, 2014 (218,424) - Took the car in to have the Air Conditioning serviced.  Sadly there is a small leak in the condenser.  I did not authorize the repair since it was going to be over 1100 dollars.  The a/c still works but will occasionally cut out for a few minutes.  This is a job that I will undertake after we get a new vehicle later in 2014 or early 2015.  It's one of those 200 dollar in parts/800 dollars in labor deals.

July 1, 2014 (218,100) - Performed monthly maintenance check - everything looks good.

June 2, 2014 (217,600) - Changed oil.  Next change around 224,000.

April 1, 2014 (214,250) - Performed monthly maintenance check - everything looks good.  Rotated tires.

March 1, 2014 (213,200) - Performed monthly maintenance check - everything looks good.

February 1, 2014 (212,000) - Changed oil and performed monthly maintenance check.  Topped off fluids. Next oil change at 217,000.

December 30, 2013 (210,960) - I had to take the car in to have the air conditioner addressed since it began issuing some smoke.  While I had the car in I also had new tires put on as well as an alignment and had a complete transmission service.  As a result the car is running absolutely like new.  I will change the oil if I get a nice day in January even though it will be a little early.

December 1, 2013 (209,700) - Performed monthly maintenance check - topped off fluids.  Everything is running well with the exception of the A/C which will get repaired prior to spring (don't really need A/C in the winter and I am hoping for some special where I can save 10 or 15% off any repair).

November 1, 2013 (208,250) - Performed monthly maintenance check - Topped off fluids.

October 24, 2013 (207,950) - Something "felt" wrong about the oil so I changed it a little early.

October 1, 2013 (206,700) - Performed monthly maintenance check.  The A/C has gone bad - I will have repaired prior to next A/C Season.  Also changed wipers.

September 1, 2013 (205,800) - I was getting some brake noise so I replaced the front pads.  The pads I took off still seemed to have a fair amount of material, but brake pads are cheap and the squeak was starting to annoy me.  I also did the 205K oil change.  I finally got a K&N Filter for the car.  My "butt dyno" tells me that it is an improvement over a stock paper air filter.  The car has now developed a slight issue with the air conditioning.  I am probably going to have to take it in again to be looked at.  Everything else on the car looks great and the car is running super.

August 15, 2013 (204,800) - I finally have the stalling issue solved - it was the crankshaft position sensor.  The Check Engine Light came on.  I read the code and it was related to the crankshaft position sensor.  I took it in and the dealer did the diagnostics and found a small issue in the plug where the sensors wiring goes into the ECM.  They fixed it up and the car has run great since.  The best thing is that it only cost me 47.50 to get it fixed.  I think after the 1700 job to do the head gasket and timing belt that they gave me a bit of a break!

August 1, 2013 (204,200) - It turns out I was totally wrong about the coolant.  When I took the car in to have the timing belt changed, I found out that the source of the leak was a blown head gasket.  I authorized the repair and the car is running great now.  Everything else on the car is great.

July 1, 2013 (203,700) - Performed monthly maintenance check.  The poor idle and stalling at stop situation has come back.  It is transient in nature so I am frustrated with my inability to nail it down better.  Everything else is just fine.  The radiator situation seems to have resolved itself.  I am thinking that I might have spilled some fluid and that's what was on my garage floor although since I do occasionally have to fill the reservoir, I suspect there is some small leak somewhere in the system.  I did add some R-134 to the air conditioning system and the unit now blows very cold air.  I have a service appointment scheduled at my local Subaru dealer to replace the timing belt (a job I just don't feel comfortable with) and hope they can shed some light on some of my minor issues.

June 1, 2013 (202,425) - Performed monthly maintenance check.  Everything it ok.  The poor idle situation has somewhat gone away.  I did spray the throttle body cable with lubricant and that seemed to help.  I really don't think it's a serious issue but I am keeping an eye on it.  I have developed a slight radiator fluid leak that I am having a hard time tracing.  When I get a nice day I plan on changing the thermostat so maybe I can find the issue.

April 30, 2013 (201,100) - Performed monthly maintenance check.  Everything ok.  I have developed an occasional issue where the car wants to idle poorly.  The problem is not regular so a diagnosis is a bit tricky.  If it starts to idle poorly a quick tap on the accelerator generally "fixes" it.  I've done a little reading and it looks like it could be anything from a sticking throttle cable to troubles with the Idle Air Control valve.  It certainly isn't "serious" but I plan on looking for a better solution in the upcoming month.

March 31, 2013 (199,800) - It was a nice day so I performed some serious maintenance as part of my monthly check.  I changed the oil, changed the transmission fluid and filter, and changed the fuel filter.  I also added some fluid to the power steering reservoir.  The car seems to be running very well.  I was hoping to hit 200K in March but it will happen in April.  My next schedules maintenance will be to change the oil at 205K and the transmission fluid and fuel filter around 220K.  When it gets a little warmer I need to change the hoses and flush out the radiator (before the summer a/c season should work).

March 1, 2013 (198,650) - Performed monthly maintenance check - no serious issues, however the car has developed a slight "squeek" at idle that seems to come and go.  I can't seem to isolated it although I suspect it may be the power steering.  As a precaution, when I get a nice day I am going to really go through the engine and change all the fluids as well as the two belts (not the timing belt as I still plan on having that changed by a professional at the deal the first week in April (spring break)).

February 1, 2013 (197,353) - Performed monthly maintenance check - no issues.  I still haven't scheduled a visit to have the timing belt replaced.  I will probably wait until spring break from school just because it is a bit of a pain to take the car in while we all have school.

January 1, 2013 (195,795) - Performed monthly maintenance check - no issues.  I do need to schedule a visit to the dealer to replace the timing belt (I really don't want to tackle that job) as well as answer a recall regarding the potential for corrosion to the control arms.  I will handle that in January when I have the time.

December 15, 2012 (194,990) - Change oil/filter (it was a nice warm December day).  Also did complete vehicle check.  Added air to two tires and topped up Power Steering Fluid and Windshield Wiper Fluid.

December 2, 2012 (194,080) - Performed monthly maintenance check - no issues.  Next scheduled maintenance is oil change at 195K.

November 8, 2012 (192,884) - Rotated tires (it was a beautiful fall day).

November 6, 2012 (192,830) - Windshield replaced by Safelite.  Since I carry full comprehensive coverage I did not have to pay a deductible.  At the same time I broke down and had the technician replace my wipers.  I actually like the new wipers better than what I was using and plan on looking into these when I replace them down the road

November 4, 2012 (192,812) - Performed monthly maintenance check - no issues.  Unfortunately the windshield was struck with some sort of debris and instantly developed a crack along the bottom of the windshield that is beyond repair and will require a new windshield.

October 1, 2012 (192,125) - Performed monthly maintenance check - no issues.  Next scheduled service is an oil change at around 195,000 miles.
