Evan Williams BE

The most recent addition to Bourbon Country is The Evan Williams Bourbon Experience.  The attraction opened in late 2013 and is located at 528 West Main Street in the heart of downtown Louisville.  That section of Main Street is known as “whiskey row” since in the early days of Louisville the thriving whiskey trade was centered in this area.

In addition to being known as a whiskey maker, Evan Williams was a prominent figure in the early days of Louisville.  The “experience” is that you get to “meet” Evan Williams (portrayed by actor Bill Simmons from Indianapolis).  The guide explains that they worked very hard searching records and archives to faithfully reproduce early Louisville. Whether or not they nailed Louisville, they certainly nailed their displays as they are of museum quality (and a good museum at that!). Sadly, the lighting is very subdued and I wasn't able to take any decent photos inside.  The attraction's website has some great info and can be accessed by clicking here

Naturally, the bourbon making process is fully explained.  There is a micro distillery in operation at the experience that produces about a barrel of bourbon per day.

The tour focuses heavily on not only bourbon but how it relates to the history of Louisville itself.

The tour concludes with a tasting of a couple high end products in a reproduction of a pre-prohibition saloon.  Our tour guide was excellent and I have no reason to believe that all the staff members are equally as informative and entertaining.

They have a nice gift shop that has all the Evan Williams products as well as themed merchandise such as glasses and cups.

They even offer military discounts, something that is always endearing to me.

Today, Evan Williams is produced by Heaven Hill Distilleries.
